"New sounds are VITAL to any given art form to keep the life blood pumping: invigorating and challenging new sounds even more so. Brainlove Records understand this better than most: showcasing nervy, angular bands with oodles of passion and - even more importantly - melody coursing through their dank underground veins." - Everett True, Careless Talk / Plan B

HISTORY & CURRENT INFO>>>...

Brainlove Records was started in 2003 by John Brainlove as an extension of the long-running Brainlove webzine. Sick & tired of the endless flow of promos by signed but nondescript bands that flooded through the Brainlove HQ mailbox, the label was started to promote newer, more original bands with better songs and better ideas. Bands that couldn't find a label because they were too arty, weird, fucked up or far out to fit in anywhere else, all kinds of bands and artists that the label felt deserved more exposure or were inspired by and wanted to work with.

Bands like The Bureau De Change - a duo that had previously been signed to Digital Hardcore (named Fidel Villeneuve at the time), but had recently parted company with the label. The Bureau De Change made jarring cartoon mashups consisting of sampled drum loops, jagged punk guitars and hilarious pop sensibility. They were from the West Midlands, and made no effort to hide their origins, unlike a lot of dislocated bands in London. This inspired Brainlove Records to put together a survey of unsigned music from the thriving Wolverhampton and Birmingham music scenes. It was called 'Sympathetic Sounds of the WILD West Midlands', and it sold out.

Joined by Athol Halle and M. Lee Hunter, Brainlove now regularly releases 7" records, digital downloads and CDs by it's core bands - Napoleon IIIrd, Pagan Wanderer Lu, Keyboard Choir and Applicants, and occasionally works with other emerging underground bands and musicians like Tim Ten Yen, Planningtorock, Bishi, Anat Ben-David, Friends Of The Bride, Modernaire and many, many more.

Brainlove also runs an ace new music night, the imaginatively titled Brainlove Club, which has also spread to an annual one-day festival in London. The label has also had bands or DJs on at Club NME @ Koko, White Heat, Hugo's Speaker Palace, Tigertrap Records, Club Fandango, Water Rats, Club Motherfucker, Artrocker, Zonino, Drowned In Sound DiScover, Trash Palace, and all kinds of nights and venues across England and Wales. A Northern all-dayer is planned for July 2008. Find out about all the latest dates here.
